Signs, Glorious, Signs.
I finally managed to sit down for a few minutes this morning and catch up with one of last Friday’s local newspapers. As I was reading it I came across another article about candidates who were having their signs stolen and/or missing from action.
This of course fueled the fire on my frustration about the whole sign issue overall … again.
As I have driven into work the last few mornings along Maple Bay Road, I’ve been greeted with an incredible gift of bright yellows, fiery reds, and luminescent golds framed against a brilliant deep blue sky as the trees are preparing for the impending winter.
This is one of my most favorite times of the year and the scene of nature’s tapestry never ceases to amaze me and is a great way to deter any speeding as I like to drive extra slowly so as to enjoy every leaf turning. (ok not every leaf; I am driving after all.)
But, there is one particular section of my commute to and from work which jolts me away from my peaceful zen-like, nature-appreciating state and that is right in front of the old Cowichan Lodge.
This area has turned into something like a scene from a spoof of an Occupy Wall Street movement on steroids. The signs along that fence line have been getting progressively bigger and bigger almost every day. And just when I would think – wow that one is the biggest yet, there would be another one even larger that would pop up.
These signs are not only gigantic, but when I think of the money and time and effort to put them up, then replace them when they go missing or vandalized, which seems inevitable according to some candidate’s reports – I really question the validity of this whole wasteful and seemingly unnecessary process.
Is this really the best way to determine who we should be voting for? Is it the one with the biggest and the most signs out there who gets to win? What about those of us who are campaigning who don’t have that kind of money and/or who don’t want to ask family and friends and supporters for money for this kind of expenditure?
I wonder and continue to wonder if there really isn’t a better way.
And I wonder if by not putting up signs as I’ve proclaimed now that I won’t do, if that is going to have an adverse affect on my campaign.
What do you think … do you like the signs? Do they help you make a good choice? Am I being ridiculous?
Let me know. And don’t hold back really … it wouldn’t be the first time I’ve been called ridiculous.
